Everything You Need to Know About SPF
When it comes to healthy, youthful-looking skin, there is one product that skincare professionals agree everyone should be using daily: SPF. While many people associate sunscreen with beach vacations and summer weather, protecting your skin from the sun is important every day of the year.
What Is SPF?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It measures how well a sunscreen protects your skin from UVB rays, which are responsible for causing sunburn and contributing to skin cancer. The higher the SPF number, the greater the level of protection. Dermatologists generally recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day.
Why Is SPF So Important?
Sun exposure is the leading cause of premature skin aging. In fact, many of the visible signs of aging- including fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, uneven skin tone, and loss of elasticity- are caused by years of unprotected sun exposure.
Wearing SPF daily helps:
• Prevent sunburn
• Reduce the risk of skin cancer
• Slow signs of premature aging
• Prevent hyperpigmentation and dark spots
• Protect the results of professional skincare treatments
If you invest in facials, chemical peels, microneedling, or other skin treatments, daily SPF is essential to maintaining your results.

Do You Need SPF on Cloudy Days?
Absolutely. Up to 80% of the sun's UV rays can penetrate clouds. Even if you don't see the sun, your skin can still be exposed to damaging UV radiation. This means SPF should be part of your daily routine regardless of the weather.
What Does "Broad Spectrum" Mean?
When choosing a sunscreen, look for one labeled "broad spectrum." This means it protects against both UVB rays, which cause burns, and UVA rays, which penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to aging and skin damage.
Both types of UV rays can negatively impact your skin, so protection from both is important.
How Much SPF Should You Apply?
Most people do not apply enough sunscreen to get the protection listed on the bottle. For your face and neck, aim for approximately a nickel-sized amount. Don't forget commonly missed areas like the ears, hairline, chest, and hands.
If you're spending time outdoors, reapply every two hours and immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.

Does Skin Tone Matter?
No matter your skin tone, SPF is important. While people with darker skin tones may be less likely to burn, UV damage can still occur and contribute to skin cancer, hyperpigmentation, and premature aging.
Everyone benefits from daily sun protection.
Think of SPF as the most effective anti-aging product in your skincare routine. Whether you're running errands, driving to work, sitting by a window, or spending a day outdoors, daily sunscreen use helps keep your skin healthy, protected, and looking its best.
