Whether you're booking a Brazilian, underarm, arm or leg wax, proper preparation and aftercare can make all the difference in your comfort, results, and skin health. Waxing removes hair from the root, which means smoother skin for longer - but it also means your skin needs a little TLC before and after to keep it soft, clear, and glowing.
Here’s your guide to getting the best results out of your wax appointment, with tips from pre-wax prep to post-wax recovery - plus why we recommend Bushbalm for everything in between!
Before Your Wax: How to Prep Like a Pro
1. Let It Grow (Within Reason)
The ideal hair length for waxing is about 1/4 inch - roughly the size of a grain of rice. If your hair is too short, the wax won’t grip properly. If it’s too long, it can be more painful. Aim to stop shaving at least 2–3 weeks before your appointment.
2. Exfoliate, But Gently
Exfoliating your skin 24-48 hours before your wax is key. This removes dead skin cells and lifts trapped hairs, helping the wax adhere better and reducing your chances of ingrowns. Use a gentle scrub or dry brush - just don’t overdo it, especially right before your appointment.
3. Clean Skin Only
Come to your appointment with clean, dry skin - no lotions, oils, or deodorants. These can interfere with the wax and make it harder to remove hair effectively.
4. Time It Right
Your skin can be more sensitive around your period, so if you're planning a Brazilian, try to schedule a few days before or after your cycle.

During Your Appointment: Breathe & Trust the Process
It’s normal to feel a little nervous - especially if it’s your first time. But a skilled esthetician will walk you through each step. Take deep breaths, relax your muscles, and know that the discomfort only lasts a few seconds at a time.
Aftercare: Show Your Skin Some Love
Your skin will be more sensitive after a wax, so baby it with proper aftercare to prevent irritation and ingrown hairs.
1. Skip the Gym & Sauna
Avoid working out, hot tubs, or steam rooms for at least 24 hours. Excess heat and sweat can irritate freshly waxed skin and lead to breakouts.
2. Keep It Loose
Wear breathable, loose clothing to avoid friction and let your skin heal properly.
3. Soothe & Treat with Bushbalm
This is where your post-wax game gets elevated. We love Bushbalm products because they’re clean, effective, and specifically formulated for waxed areas.
Bushbalm Exfoliating Scrubs (like their Nude or Sweet Escape) gently buff away dead skin cells, preventing ingrown hairs and keeping skin ultra-smooth. Use 2-3 times a week starting 48 hours after your wax.
Bushbalm Ingrown Hair Oil is a holy grail product. With soothing ingredients like tea tree and jojoba oil, it calms inflammation, fights bacteria, and softens hair regrowth. Apply daily post-wax for best results.
Consistency is Key
The more regularly you wax, the finer and sparser your hair will grow. Stick to a schedule (every 4-6 weeks) and maintain a solid exfoliation and hydration routine at home.
Your smoothest skin yet is just a few steps away - and with the right prep and aftercare, waxing can truly become a game-changer in your beauty routine!
